ROC Posts

ROC posts are small concrete underground bunkers that can be found usually in remote areas all over the United Kingdom. ROC stands for Royal Observer Corps which was the civil organisation operating them during the Cold War. The posts were constructed and used for reporting nuclear explosions and monitoring the fallout in case of a nuclear war with the Socialist Bloc. The construction project started in 1956 and within few years there were built approximately 1563 all over the country and were located in the network within approximately 7 to 10 miles apart from neighbouring posts. About half of them were shut down in 1968 during the reorganization of the Royal Observer Corps and while others were closed over the next years until 1991 that the remainder closed as a result of the collapse of the Socialist Bloc and the end of the Cold War. Today, 30+ years later, half of them have been demolished or privately owned while the rest lie derelict and abandoned usually trashed and vandalized.
