RAF Polebrook

RAF Polebrook

The PGM-17A Thor was the first operative ballistic missile of the United States Air Force (USAF). It was named after the Norse god of thunder. It was deployed in the United Kingdom between 1959 and September 1963 as an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) with thermonuclear warheads. RAF Polebrook was one of the bases where “No. 130 (Strategic Missile) Squadron” was stationed and had under their control three Thor missiles. Nuclear apocalypse never came so we can now enjoy seeing the remnants of these launch pads.

The first good few photos up to the memorial show the Battle Headquarter bunker of the base which is partially flooded and the rest show the concrete launch pads and their bits around where the missiles were mounted.
